Legal Counsel/Officer, United Nations

ADF International is looking for a highly professional UN Legal Counsel/Officer to work from a  home office based in New York City.  As UN Legal Counsel/Officer, you are a vital part of the ADF International team. In this role you will report to the Director of UN Advocacy, and advocate for the positions of ADF International (consistent with the doctrinal distinctives and strategic objectives) with the diplomats at the United Nations Headquarters., This position requires outstanding ability and propensity for developing and cultivating relationships with key stakeholders at the highest levels of United Nations decision-making.


  • Engage in written and oral advocacy within the UN and related institutions.
  • Work collectively with allies and build likeminded coalitions to promote a vision of authentic human rights at the UN.
  • Create high-level alliances with government representatives and other stakeholders.
  • Draft interventions and submissions for the UN and related institutions.
  • Write scholarly articles, present at conferences, and conduct training and strategy sessions.
  • Work cross-team to coordinate advocacy efforts and provide support to other teams as needed.
  • Advise and work with allied lawyers and organizations on legal issues within areas of competence.
  • Network and develop relationships with allied lawyers and organizations.

  • Identify and develop strategic relationships with key stakeholders within the UN diplomatic community in New York.
  • Comfortably engage and work with persons from all cultural and religious backgrounds.
  • Research and draft sophisticated memos, interventions, and submissions for UN and related institutions.
  • Prepare and deliver oral presentations with excellence.
  • Engage in debates and be able to counter arguments “on your feet”.
  • Support the Director of UN Advocacy in developing and implementing strategies for defending and advancing our core issues at the UN and related institutions.
  • Work, self-motivate, and collaborate within a team.
  • Prioritize and achieve strict deadlines under pressure.
  • Professionally handle confidential information.
  • Travel internationally, including travel on short notice.
  • Live and work in New York City.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Background in law, human rights, international relations, diplomacy or equivalent. J.D. degree or equivalent strongly desirable.
  • Academic excellence
  • In addition to English, have proficiency in Arabic, French or Spanish
  • Relevant experience or work in human rights, advocacy and diplomacy
  • Proven track record of success of strategic partnership with individuals and groups from different backgrounds, ideally within an international context
  • High cultural competence and interpersonal skills.
  • Competence in computer equipment and technological software

Work permit for the USA or USA citizenship required.
