Asia Bibi – the EU’s lack of leadership in protecting religious minorities worldwide

Over the last two weeks, Asia Bibi’s story has made for sad headlines in Europe and across the globe. The Pakistani Christian woman was freed after eight years on death row for having allegedly committed blasphemy. However, she has still not been allowed to leave the country and her life is in great danger.

Asia Bibi is not the first, and unlikely to be the last Pakistani Christian victimized by blasphemy laws. In fact, aggression and violence against religious minorities in Pakistan are expected to rise following the decision of the Pakistani Supreme Court, which acquitted Bibi.

More than 230 parliamentarians, mainly from EU member states, have recently written an open letter to the Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, asking him to let the mother of five go. Surprisingly, Ms Mogherini, the EU’s foreign affairs representative, has remained silent. But what steps could the EU take? What mechanisms does it have, and what does it lack in addressing religious persecution worldwide?
