Midwifery student Julia Rynkiewicz believes so, and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">her\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">newly-settled<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0case\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">provides one\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">such\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">example<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Rynkiewicz served as president of \u201cNottingham Students for Life\u201d, a pro-life student society that was initially denied affiliation by Nottingham University\u2019s Students\u2019 Union. <\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Concerns\u00a0around\u00a0Rynkiewicz\u2019s fitness\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">practise<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">centered on material available at the society\u2019s freshers\u2019 fair stall, as well as her public association with\u00a0the society.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">She faced a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">suspension and four-month fitness<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">-to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">-practice investigation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">disrupting her education<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">n the wake of the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Fitness to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Practise<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0panel dismissing all\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">allegations\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">against her<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, she believes that she was unfairly targeted for her beliefs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">that there were significant procedural failures compromising the investigation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">that the university should\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">apologize<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">as a matter of justice<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Following the dismissal of the allegations against her, Julia filed a formal complaint with the University. The letter\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">asks\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">that the government take s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">teps to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">end to \u201cno-platforming&#8220;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and strengthen legal safeguards for academic freedom<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.protectfreespeech.uk\">Supporters of free speech are\u00a0<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">encouraged\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">to add their signature.<\/span><\/p><p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cOf all places, university is where students should be free to debate and explore ideas \u2013 especially those with which they disagree.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I\u2019m pleased that with this settlement, Nottingham University\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">recognised<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0errors that were made in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">pursuing\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Julia\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">who\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">simply\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">wanted to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">live\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">out her pro-life\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">onvictions<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. However, t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">he results of ADF International (UK)\u2019s recent poll<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0show<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0that the discriminatory\u00a0silencing\u00a0of Julia\u2019s voice is not an isolated incident.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">1 in 3\u00a0students\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">fear\u00a0that their views would be considered \u201cunacceptable\u201d.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">A culture of vibrant discussion and free debate must be restored\u00a0to\u00a0our\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">universities<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Today\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">censorial<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">culture on campus can easily become cancel culture in the public square,\u201d said Ryan Christopher, Director of ADF International
