Finnish Member of Parliament P\u00e4ivi R\u00e4s\u00e4nen is hopeful, looking forward to the anniversary of her acquittal on March 30th,<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: 1.1px;\" data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0despite the Finnish state prosecutor\u2019s continued censorship campaign against her as she faces a second trial over her Bible tweet post.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: 1.1px;\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">On 30<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> March 2022, the Helsinki District Court unanimously dismissed all charges against P\u00e4ivi R\u00e4s\u00e4nen and Bishop Juhana Pohjola, stating that \u201cit is not for the district court to interpret biblical concepts\u201d.\u00a0 Nevertheless, the prosecutor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/yle.fi\/uutiset\/3-12386496\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">filed <\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">an appeal against the \u201cnot guilty\u201d verdict last April. The prosecution has demanded tens of thousands of Euros in fines and continues to insist that R\u00e4s\u00e4nen\u2019s and Pohjola\u2019s publications be censored.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cBy continuing its campaign to censor peaceful beliefs the prosecution is setting a dangerous precedent of intolerance against free speech. I will keep fighting for free speech because it is the cornerstone of a free and democratic society. Bishop Juhana Pohjola faced charges for publishing R\u00e4s\u00e4nen\u2019s pamphlet for his congregation over 17 years ago.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Their case garnered global media attention last year, as human rights experts voiced concern over the threat this case posed to free speech in Finland.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cWhen a longstanding and respected Finnish parliamentarian is put on trial twice for sharing her deeply held beliefs in a tweet four years ago, you know regard for free speech in Europe has hit a new low. Everyone who cares about free speech should be outraged at the continued prosecution of P\u00e4ivi R\u00e4s\u00e4nen. The prosecution wants to make an example of P\u00e4ivi to scare others into silence. They failed in the first trial. As an active member of the Finnish Lutheran church, she had addressed the leadership of her church on Twitter and questioned its official sponsorship of the LGBT event &#8218;Pride 2019&#8216;, accompanied by an image of Bible verses from the New Testament book of Romans. Two of the three charges R\u00e4s\u00e4nen faced came after the police made strong recommendations not to continue the prosecution. It also ordered the prosecution to pay more than 60,000 EUR in legal costs. Unlike many other legal systems, under Finnish law the prosecutor can appeal \u201cnot guilty\u201d verdicts all the way to the Supreme Court of Finland.
