On August 16<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a mob of hundreds of Islamic extremists began rioting, destroying at least <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1771205?s=08\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">19 churches<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and many homes in Christian communities in eastern Pakistan. The attacks, which were in retaliation against an alleged crime of \u201cblasphemy\u201d by two Christians, have garnered <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-66517901\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">international attention<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/USCIRF\/status\/1691922008324337687?s=20\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">widespread condemnation<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UK_FoRBEnvoy\/status\/1691844528741786079?s=20\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">religious freedom advocates.<\/span><\/a><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe scale and severity of the attacks against Christians in Pakistan is unconscionable,\u201d said Kelsey Zorzi, Director of Advocacy for Global Religious Freedom for ADF International. \u201cNobody should be persecuted for living out their faith, and all who are able need to speak out and condemn these targeted attacks on the minority Christian community. Our hope is that Pakistani authorities will be able to quell the violence and pursue justice for the victims. Where these repressive laws exist, they create a climate of hostility against religious minorities, and fertile ground for radicals to wreak havoc against those whom they perceive as blasphemers,\u201d stated Tehmina Arora, Director of Advocacy, Asia, for ADF International.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/pakistani-christian-community-attacked-after-blasphemy-accusation-police-2023-08-16\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">August 16<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">th<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, violence broke out in the small town of Jaranwala, outside Faisalabad in eastern Pakistan. A mob of radical Muslims, many of whom were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/krosskonnection.pk\/2023\/08\/several-churches-vandalised-christians-homes-torched-over-blasphemy-allegations-in-faisalabads-jaranwala\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">mobilized and directed by local mosques<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0descended upon the town, which is a largely Christian community, and began destroying homes, in addition to burning down and desecrating churches. Some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1771205?s=08\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">reports<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> put the number of destroyed Christian churches at 19.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The mob <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearreligion.org\/articles\/2023\/08\/22\/today_stand_with_victims_of_blasphemy_laws_974351.html\">violence<\/a> was in response to alleged blasphemy by two young Christians who were accused of ripping pages out of the Quran and writing insults in red ink on the removed pages.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Background on Blasphemy<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Pakistan is one of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2022\/01\/25\/four-in-ten-countries-and-territories-worldwide-had-blasphemy-laws-in-2019-2\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">seven<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> countries in the world where blasphemy is punishable by death. This year alone, there have been over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/voicepk.net\/2023\/05\/57-accused-of-blasphemy-from-jan-to-may-4-killed\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">60 reported cases<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of alleged blasphemy in Pakistan. Though no one has been formally executed for alleged blasphemy in the country, dozens have been killed or injured by mobs after being accused of the crime.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Pakistani couple <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adfinternational.org\/blasphemous-couple-tell-of-escape\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Shagufta Kausar and Shafqat Emmanuel<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> recently faced death-by-hanging in Lahore as a consequence of Pakistan\u2019s blasphemy laws. Shafqat was pressured into a false confession, following beatings from radicals and threats towards his wife, Shagufta. The Catholic couple, alongside their four children, were assisted by ADF International to reach safety in Europe after a court in Lahore acquitted them of their charges in June 2021, under pressure from the European Union and other international entities. The family continued to face death threats by extremists despite being fully acquitted.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Freedom of Religion or Belief<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearreligion.org\/articles\/2023\/08\/22\/today_stand_with_victims_of_blasphemy_laws_974351.html\">Blasphemy laws<\/a> plague and threaten the lives of religious minorities across the globe. In northern Nigeria, where blasphemy is also punishable by death, a young Sufi Muslim named <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adfinternational.org\/free-yahaya\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Yahaya Sharif-Aminu<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> received the death penalty for sending WhatsApp messages that were deemed \u201cblasphemous\u201d. A mob burned down his family home, and he was sentenced to death by hanging in a Sharia court, despite not having a lawyer.
