The Dolpa District court had on November 30<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0sentenced Pastor Keshab, 32, to two years in prison and a fine of 20,000 Nepali rupees (approx. 170 USD) for \u201coutraging religious feelings\u201d and \u201cproselytizing\u201d. He\u00a0has now\u00a0appealed\u00a0the ruling\u00a0and is temporarily free on bail.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cNo one\u00a0should live in fear of being arrested, oppressed or criminally charged for sharing their religious beliefs.\u00a0We are glad that bail was granted in Pastor Keshab\u2019s case and\u00a0that\u00a0he will be home\u00a0with his family\u00a0for Christmas.\u00a0No one should be sentenced for praying and sharing the gospel. So, we hope the court will uphold religious freedom when it considers Pastor Keshab\u2019s appeal.\u00a0We urge the Nepalese government to\u00a0ensure that all persons\u00a0are able to\u00a0freely practice and profess their faith by safeguarding\u00a0fundamental freedoms\u00a0in line with their international commitments,\u201d\u00a0said Tehmina Arora, Director of Advocacy, Asia for ADF International.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\"><b>Sentenced to jail over prayer<\/b><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">On March 23, Pastor Keshab received a call from a man requesting prayer for his sick wife. In response, Pastor Keshab invited the man to come to his house for prayer. When the knock at the door came later, four police officers were there to arrest him. The pastor was released on April 8 only to be re-arrested moments\u00a0later on\u00a0charges of \u201coutraging religious feelings\u201d and \u201cproselytizing\u201d because he had been distributing gospel tracts. The\u00a0Dolpa\u00a0District Attorney\u2019s office filed charges on 21 May under Nepal\u2019s Criminal Code which prohibits converting anyone from one religion to another.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Pastor Keshab was denied bail on May 22, but after over a month the district judge decided to release him temporarily on bail equivalent to 2,500 USD. Five days after the order, he was released on July 3.\u00a0The court\u00a0then\u00a0sentenced Pastor Keshab for printing and distributing gospel tracts\u00a0on 30 November.\u00a0He was released on bail this week until his appeal\u00a0is\u00a0decided.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Reflecting on almost three months of imprisonment before his sentencing, Pastor Keshab said: \u201cIt was very difficult for me. I would think of my little children and my wife, and I would cry out to the Lord in prayer. Pastor Keshab was merely helping sick people by praying to God for their wellbeing. The District Court\u2019s decision goes beyond the scope of the law and must be corrected.
