On 24 January, former Minister of the Interior <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adfinternational.org\/freespeechontrial\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">P\u00e4ivi R\u00e4s\u00e4nen<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> will face a criminal trial after being accused of engaging in \u201chate speech\u201d for publicly voicing her deeply held beliefs on marriage and human sexuality. In April 2021, the Prosecutor General brought three criminal charges against R\u00e4s\u00e4nen over the contents of a church pamphlet R\u00e4s\u00e4nen wrote over 17 years ago, for engaging in a debate on a 2019 radio show and, most recently, for a tweet containing a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adfinternational.org\/paivi\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">picture of Bible verses<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> she directed at her church leadership. <a class=\"Hyperlink BCX0 SCXW245967038\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Nh0F51SGUHo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"TextRun Underlined BCX0 SCXW245967038\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW245967038\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">Bishop Juhana Pohjola<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"TextRun BCX0 SCXW245967038\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW245967038\"> who published her pamphlet for his congregation faces trial<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW245967038\"> alongside her<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW245967038\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/span> \u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI have a calm mind ahead of the trial. I trust that we still live in a democracy, and we have our constitution and international agreements that guarantee our freedom of speech and religion. If I win the case, I think that it is a very important step for freedom of speech and religion. I think it\u2019s not only important for Finland but also in Europe and other countries. If I\u2019m convicted, I think that the worst consequence would not be the fine against me, or even the prison sentence, it would be the censorship. So, now it is time to speak. As an active member of the Finnish Lutheran church, she had addressed the leadership of her church on Twitter and questioned its official sponsorship of the LGBT event &#8218;Pride 2019&#8216;, accompanied by an image of Bible verses from the New Testament book of Romans. Following this tweet, further investigations against R\u00e4s\u00e4nen were launched, going back to a church pamphlet R\u00e4s\u00e4nen wrote almost 20 years ago. In the last two years, R\u00e4s\u00e4nen has attended several lengthy police interrogations about her Christian beliefs \u2013 including being frequently asked by the police to explain her understanding of the Bible.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Two of the three charges R\u00e4s\u00e4nen faces come after the police made strong recommendations not to continue the prosecution. R\u00e4s\u00e4nen\u2019s statements also did not violate the policies of Twitter or the national broadcaster, which is why they are still freely available on their platforms.
