In April 2022, Quadri was <a href=\"https:\/\/adfinternational.org\/news\/petition-congressman-gabriel-quadri\">convicted<\/a>\u00a0for \u201cgender based political violence\u201d on the basis of his X (at the time Twitter) posts regarding gender.<\/p><p>Quadri was convicted following a series of posts he made on Twitter\/X expressing concern that seats in Mexico\u2019s Congress reserved for women were taken by men who identify as women, in addition to posts regarding biological reality, including with respect to women\u2019s sports.\u00a0 In addition to deleting the posts, he was forced to post a public apology drafted by the Court for 15 days at two set times per day on Twitter\/X, and to complete two courses on \u201cgender-based violence and transgender violence.\u201d Further, he was registered as a \u201cgender-based political violator.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-204615ce elementor-blockquote--skin-border elementor-widget elementor-widget-blockquote\" data-id=\"204615ce\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"blockquote.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote class=\"elementor-blockquote\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-blockquote__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #AF272F\">\u201cI am committed to safeguarding every Mexican\u2019s fundamental right to speak freely. <span> My career has been dedicated to a prosperous and free Mexico for all, which demands that our country abide by its human rights obligations. Now, just a few years later, sanity is being restored across the world as the tide turns against gender ideology. Countless public officials at the highest levels are stating the same things that landed Quadri with a guilty verdict. It is egregiously unjust for Quadri to have suffered the ignominy of a conviction, and having his reputation damaged because of his registration as a \u2018political violator\u2019, which could have negatively impacted<\/em><em> his re-election bid, for simply standing up for the truth,\u201d <\/em>\u00a0said<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/adfinternational.org\/our-team\/julio-pohl\">Julio ADF International\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/adfinternational.org\/news\/petition-congressman-gabriel-quadri\">filed a petition<\/a>\u00a0with the Commission in December 2022.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>In 2024, the Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/g_quadri\/status\/1749559002650816859?t=U_n3VmVQg75r4Maq0E2wWw&amp;s=08\">requested<\/a> the government of Mexico to respond to the complaint regarding Quadri\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/adfinternational.org\/our-focus\/censorship\">censorship<\/a>\u00a0as a human rights violation under the American Convention on Human Rights.\u00a0The government has not responded and now the Commission will decide the case on the merits.<\/p><p>Pohl added: \u201c<em>We are pleased that the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights will decide the case on the merits. This is a pivotal moment for fundamental freedoms\u2014if elected officials are not free to debate the issues of our time, what hope is there for everyone else? The Commission should work to reach a just resolution for Mr. \u00a0<\/em><em>Quadri<\/em><em>, paving the way for greater free speech accountability in Mexico<\/em>\u201d.\u00a0<\/p><p>The Inter-American Commission is one of the two bodies that make up the regional human rights adjudication system with jurisdiction over Mexico. Lengthy timeframes take a heavy toll on the service of justice, as the Quadri case shows, with over two years having passed from the original filing date.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>\u201cPolitical violator against women\u201d conviction for Twitter\/X Posts<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p><p>\u201c<em>I am committed to safeguarding every Mexican\u2019s fundamental right to speak freely. He has been active in politics since 2012.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>As of 2019, Mexico has in place a law requiring 50\/50 representation of men and women in all branches of government. In the 2021 elections, two congressional seats reserved for women were given to males who identify as women.\u00a0<\/p><p>Quadri tweeted about the congressional seats, making the point that it is an injustice for males to take advantage of the law to gain access to political positions reserved for women. In March 2022, member of congress Salma Luevano, who identifies as a transgender woman, filed a complaint accusing Quadri of \u201cgender based political violence\u201d for his tweets.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>On April 21st, the Superior Chamber of the Federal Electoral Tribunal unanimously found Quadri guilty of \u201cgender based political violence\u201d for the tweets.\u00a0<\/p><p>Quadri\u2019s last option for domestic appeal was rejected on June 22, 2022.<\/p><p>Former Mexican Congressman\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/adfinternational.org\/cases\/rodrigo-ivan-cortes\">Rodrigo Iv\u00e1n Cort\u00e9s<\/a> also was charged and convicted for \u201cgender based political violence\u201d for social media posts. His case is <a href=\"https:\/\/adfinternational.org\/news\/rodrigo-ivan-cortes-iachr\">pending<\/a>\u00a0before the Commission.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div
