The following quote may be attributed to ADF International Legal Counsel Adina Portaru regarding Wednesday’s decision by the Constitutional Court of Romania that upholds as constitutional a citizen initiative affirming marriage as the union of one man and one woman—an amendment supported by three million citizens, the largest number to support such a petition in the entire history of Romania:
“Society should protect and strengthen marriage, not further undermine it. That was the goal behind the initiative that the citizens of Romania put forward, and the Constitutional Court was right to uphold the Romanian people’s freedom to affirm this social policy. This victory for marriage, family, and democracy as a whole reflects international and European human rights standards and jurisprudence, which highlight that marriage is the natural and fundamental group unit of society. The union between one man and one woman is timeless, universal, and unique. It expresses the reality that men and women bring distinct, irreplaceable gifts to family life. Because the initiative understands this and has at its heart the good of society, families, and children, we commend the court for affirming its legitimacy.”
ADF International filed a friend-of-the-court brief with the Constitutional Court that strongly recommended a favourable decision on the initiative.
