The Nottingham Students\u2019 Union had sought to argue that the values of the pro-life group \u201cdid not align\u201d with their own and rejected the group\u2019s application for affiliation on that basis. However, with the help of ADF International, \u201cNottingham Students for Life\u201d was able to challenge the decision, arguing that the Union had a legal commitment to represent all students whether or not they agreed with their beliefs. Consequently, the Students\u2019 Union has now reversed its original decision and granted the pro-life group affiliation.<\/p><p>\u201cFreedom of speech is the foundation of every free and democratic society. Of all places, university is where students should be free to debate and explore ideas, even those with which they might disagree. This simply does not work when a students\u2019 representative body \u2018picks sides\u2019 and censors students that it disagrees with. Students\u2019 Unions have a legal obligation to treat all groups fairly, and should focus on cultivating an environment where students are able to have difficult conversations without fear of censorship. We congratulate the \u2018Nottingham Students for Life\u2019 on their new affiliation and hope that other student representative bodies pay very careful attention to this outcome,\u201d said Laurence Wilkinson, Legal Counsel for ADF International in London.<\/p><blockquote><p>&#8220;Freedom of speech is the foundation of every free and democratic society. Of all places, university is where students should be free to debate and explore ideas, even those with which they might disagree.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote><p><b>Protecting free speech on UK campuses<\/b><\/p><p>In 2018, the Joint Committee on Human Rights in Parliament released a report on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/business\/committees\/committees-a-z\/joint-select\/human-rights-committee\/inquiries\/parliament-2017\/inquiry\/\">Freedom of Speech in Universities<\/a> which criticised the \u201cno-platforming\u201d policies on UK campuses stifling debate around \u201cunpopular\u201d opinions. David Issacs, the Equality and Human Rights Commission Chair, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2019\/07\/04\/pro-life-christian-societies-must-not-blocked-campus-due-hypersensitivity\/\">recently re-emphasised<\/a> that universities should act as \u201cbastions of debate and defenders of expression\u201d and should not be hindering pro-life societies from affiliation simply because students disagreed with their views.<\/p><p>Across the UK, many pro-life groups have been hampered in their ability to speak freely on campus and enjoy the same benefits as other student societies. However in the last 10 months, student representative bodies at <a href=\"https:\/\/adfint.wpengine.com\/news\/freedom-of-speech-upheld-at-glasgow-university-following-legal-challenge\/\">Glasgow<\/a> University, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/news\/17191395.student-ban-on-pro-life-groups-at-strathclyde-university-is-dropped\/\">Strathclyde<\/a> University, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-scotland-north-east-orkney-shetland-48334562\">Aberdeen<\/a> University have all had to reverse their decisions to refuse affiliation to pro-life groups after the groups raised the prospect of legal proceedings.<\/p><p>Julia Rynkiewicz, President of Nottingham Students for Life, said, \u201cI am grateful that our rights to freely speak and assemble at the University of Nottingham were upheld. We know that we are not the first society to face this kind of open hostility because of our views on when life begins, and we certainly won\u2019t be the last. Our pleas to the Students\u2019 Union to ensure a respectful and tolerant environment for all students had fallen on deaf ears, and it is regrettable that it took the threat of legal action in order for the Union to take its legal obligations seriously.
