The most common activities of pro-life groups were found to be quiet or silent prayer, or offering leaflets about charitable support available to women who would like to consider alternative options to abortion.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Alina Dulgheriu, a mother who changed her mind about abortion due to an offer help presented to her at the gates of an abortion facility, spoke out on the behalf of campaign group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.behereforme.org\">Be Here for Me<\/a> against the criminalisation of volunteers offering practical and financial support to women in need:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhat kind of society withholds help from vulnerable women? I didn\u2019t want an abortion but I was abandoned by my partner, my friends and society. My financial situation at the time would have made raising a child very challenging. Thanks to the help I was offered by a group outside of a clinic before my appointment, my daughter is here today. My experience is typical of hundreds of others. Refusing charitable volunteers from offering much-needed services and resources for women in my situation is wrong. Clause 9 of the Public Order Bill, currently under parliamentary debate, would prohibit pro-life volunteers from \u201cinfluencing\u201d, \u201cadvising\u201d, \u201cpersuading\u201d, \u201cinforming\u201d, \u201coccupying space\u201d or even \u201cexpressing opinion\u201d within the vicinity of an abortion facility.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Those who breach the rules could face up to two years in prison.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The censorial provisions drew substantive criticism from members of the House of Lords, including Liberal Democrat Peer Lord Beith, who deemed the clause \u201cthe most profound restriction on free speech I have ever seen in any UK legislation.\u201d\u00a0Lord Farmer called the clause \u201cfundamentally flawed\u201d, and asked, \u201cWhen one walks past, one sees that vigils are often small groups of harmless, mainly female, pensioners. Why should they be banned and silenced?\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Clause has caused great controversy following\u00a0a <a href=\"https:\/\/questions-statements.parliament.uk\/written-statements\/detail\/2022-10-24\/hlws333\">statement released<\/a> by the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State shortly after MPs voted to include it, admitting that the clause \u201ccould not be said to be compliant\u201d with Convention rights as protected in the European Court of Human Rights.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Baroness Claire Fox, who advocates for abortion, pointed out in the House of Lords that \u201ccreating prohibitions on protest on an issue-by-issue basis is not an appropriate way to make law.
