Yet, the Police Community Support Officer asks if she is silently praying for \u201cunborn children\u201d and if she is a member of a pro-life or pro-choice organisation. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201c<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">The UK government urgently needs to clarify that silent thoughts can never be illegal \u2013 even if those thoughts are in disagreement with the views of the State. This is the third time I have been treated like a criminal for peacefully, silently, and imperceptibly praying for women who are likely facing one of the worst days of their lives,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> explained Isabel Vaughan-Spruce.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201c<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">The buffer zone regulation has already sought to prevent me and others from counselling women desperately in need of help. And now, authorities are trying to remove my ability even to pray for these women. To fine somebody simply for their thoughts is grossly Orwellian and an insult to the freedoms that Britain is meant to protect,<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201d she continued.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span>\n\nDespite being subject to invasive questioning on the street, and informed that she would be fined, the Council later refrained from doing so, opting instead to issue a formal warning that it would do so in the future.\n\n<b><span data-contrast=\"none\">One of Several Christians Fined<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">The incident is not isolated. Also in Birmingham, another Christian, Patrick Parkes, was approached by officers on 13<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> October at the same location and grilled as to the content of his silent prayers. Parkes later received a warning that he would be fined if he repeated his actions.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">A third individual received a similar warning as a result of recording the footage of the officer\u2019s interaction with Parkes.<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<b><span data-contrast=\"none\">A Long Ordeal<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">In March, Vaughan-Spruce was brought before Birmingham Magistrates\u2019 Court after being arrested for praying in the \u201cbuffer zone\u201d, in which authorities have banned any \u201cexpression of approval or disapproval of abortion\u201d, including through prayer. The arrest was captured on a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MrWinMarshall\/status\/1606051109923041280\">viral video<\/a>.<\/span>\n\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">Though fully acquitted, Vaughan-Spruce was arrested again only weeks later for the same action &#8211; silently praying in her head in the censorial \u201cbuffer zone\u201d. Last month, authorities concluded their investigation into her second \u201cthoughtcrime\u201d without bringing another charge, and apologised for the length of her ordeal.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">Yet now, just weeks later, authorities have again sought to penalise Vaughan-Spruce for peaceful, silent prayer.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cIt\u2019s not for authorities to determine the thoughts in the privacy of an individual\u2019s mind. Yet the PCSO officer saw fit to pry into the content of Isabel\u2019s private prayers, and inquire as to her membership of a prolife organisation \u2013 neither of which are criminal acts. Legislators must now introduce concrete changes to law to safeguard the peaceful expressions of speech and free exercise of thought. Paying lip service to fundamental rights is\u00a0 insufficient.
