In August, Cort\u00e9s was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adfinternational.org\/news\/mexican-civil-society-leader-found-guilty-of-gender-based-political-violence-for-tweets\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">convicted<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of \u201cgender-based political violence,\u201d including digital violence, for social media posts on X and Facebook referring to transgender-identifying Mexican Congressional representative, Salma Lu\u00e9vano, as a \u201cman who self-ascribes as a woman\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lu\u00e9vano filed a complaint against Cort\u00e9s, arguing that\u202f9 social media posts on X and Facebook violated the alleged right to be \u201cacknowledged as a woman\u201d and a \u201cdenial of identity\u201d. Cort\u00e9s was charged with \u201cgender-based political violence\u201d merely because Luevano is a sitting member of the Mexican Congress.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Following a failed appeal to Mexico\u2019s Electoral Superior Chamber, all avenues for justice in Mexico have been exhausted, requiring Cort\u00e9s to seek justice at the international level. Following his conviction, the Superior Chamber imposed a fine of $19,244.00 MXN, in addition to directing Cort\u00e9s to publish the court ruling and a compelled apology written by the court and imposed verbatim on Cort\u00e9s, in his social media accounts, daily, for 30 days. Cortes\u2019 council found and produced evidence that two of the five judges had incurred in inappropriate off-the-record meetings and communications with the complainant, Luevano, calling into question their impartiality. Judge de la Mata was discovered sending improper messages to Luevano, proclaiming his \u201cally status\u201d to Luevano\u2019s cause, his support to \u201cthe struggle\u201d, and his \u201cgratefulness\u201d for being part of Luevano\u2019s advocacy.
