Freedom of expression must be protected \u2013 online and offline.<\/em><\/span><\/p><p><em>&#8220;Examples of this conduct are troublingly numerous. EU Commissioner Thierry Breton threatened X for hosting political speech; T\u00fcrkiye fined Meta for refusing to restrict content about protests; and Australia required X to remove a post criticizing an individual for promoting gender ideology.<\/em><\/p><p><em>&#8220;Even when content may be objectionable, censorship undermines democracy, suppresses political opponents, and degrades public safety. The United States opposes efforts to undermine freedom of expression. As <a dir=\"ltr\" style=\"font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: 0px;\" role=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SecRubio\">@SecRubio <\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: 0px;\">said, our diplomacy will continue to place an emphasis on promoting fundamental freedoms.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p><p><strong>Reacting to the news of the State Department\u2019s intervention, Chris Elston (\u201cBillboard Chris\u201d) said:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s tremendous to have the State Department support what we all know is true: free speech is a fundamental right, critical to a democratic society.\u00a0<\/em><\/p><p><em>If our free speech can\u2019t be protected when we speak out against the greatest child abuse scandal in the world right now, when can it be?\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Both \ud835\udd4f and Billboard Chris, who was supported by ADF International and the Australian Human Rights Law Alliance, legally challenged the decision in Melbourne last month.
