As part of his Christian calling, he preaches in the open air. But in May 2020, local authorities censored him for the apparent use of \u201cabusive words\u201d likely to cause \u201charassment, alarm or distress\u201d. \u201c<i>I was only saying what the Bible says \u2013 I wasn\u2019t wanting to hurt anyone or cause offence,<\/i>\u201d refuted Sherwood. He had preached from Genesis 1:26. <i>Male and female they created them<\/i>. It\u2019s his basis for the belief that marriage is between one man and one woman \u2013 a view held by\u00a0about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/topics\/politics\/trackers\/support-for-marriage-of-same-sex-couple\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/topics\/politics\/trackers\/support-for-marriage-of-same-sex-couple&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1621340848654000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHGSchI4RpwyDuH5X2O1-OCZ5tIFQ\">1 in 5 Brits<\/a>.<i>\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><em>How have we got here?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Public Order Act 1986 was introduced to give the police powers to tackle violent football hooliganism and riots. However,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the Act is now more often used to arrest people for legitimate speech. T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he subjective ban on &#8220;insulting&#8221; speech was removed from the law 8 years ago, but <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a person is still guilty of an offence if he or she \u201cuses threatening\u202for abusive\u202fwords or behaviour, or disorderly behaviour\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In practice, it is very difficult for law enforcers to know what the word \u201cabusive\u201d is, and many street evangelists have been stopped from preaching or reading the bible on the streets because passers-by have thought that their words have been offensive and \u201cabusive\u201d. Regardless of tone or substance, street preachers are often arrested because of the risk that somebody in the vicinity could be offended. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The PCSC Bill seeks to strengthen police powers to respond to public order incidents <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and protests.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">We are concerned that the Bill could make things worse for Christians to share about their faith publicly.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Bill, if passed today, would give police broad powers to impose conditions or arrest people if their public expression causes \u201cserious\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">unease<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, alarm or distress\u201d, or even \u201cinconvenience\u201d to bystanders; concepts that are highly ambiguous and incredibly subjective.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\"> We are campaigning for clarification in this law that will emphasise the importance of protecting free speech.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Will you stand with us for free speech? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adf.uk\/campaigns\/\">Write to your MP to ask them to support this in parliament today!<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The laws that govern behaviour on our streets have had a chilling effect on freedom of speech.
