One year ago, while campaigning for president, Trump himself was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-elon-musk-donald-trump-interview-thierry-breton-letter-social-media\/\">threatened with censorship<\/a> under the DSA leading up to an X interview with Elon Musk.<\/p>\n<p>The hearing at the U.S. Congress takes place just months before the European Commission\u2019s first DSA review in November 2025, yet the almost no details on the process or who will be involved.<\/p>\n<p>In his testimony, Price warned that without oversight, the DSA\u2019s broad powers could become entrenched and exported worldwide, influencing how tech companies control speech far beyond Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Price warned that Europe\u2019s growing offenses against free speech could easily enter the US under the DSA&#8217;s provisions. He cited a string of censorship attempts in Europe, including the case of <a href=\"https:\/\/adfinternational.org\/campaign\/free-speech-on-trial\">Paivi Rasanen, a Finnish Parliamentarian<\/a> who has endured over six years of prosecution for tweeting a Bible verse. <a href=\"https:\/\/judiciary.house.gov\/committee-activity\/hearings\/europes-threat-american-speech-and-innovation\">MP Nigel Farage also testified at the hearing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder the DSA, what happens in Europe won\u2019t stay in Europe,\u201d Price said. \u201cThe internet is global. If American policymakers don\u2019t push back against the DSA model, the same speech restrictions now emerging in Europe will be imported here.&#8221;<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-255114d4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"255114d4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What is the Digital Services Act?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-20b5f47 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"20b5f47\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The European Union\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/adfinternational.org\/es\/article\/digital-services-act-unpacked\">Digital Services Act (DSA<\/a>) was passed in 2022 and came into full effect in 2025, introducing sweeping regulations on online platforms. While presented as a framework for online safety, it gives the European Commission, the EU\u2019s top executive arm, broad power to oversee what content remains online on very large platforms.<\/p>\n<p>On July 1, 2025, the DSA\u2019s \u201cCode of Conduct on Disinformation\u201d went into effect. The code requires platforms to monitor content and swiftly remove anything deemed as \u201cdisinformation\u201d under EU law. The law also relies on \u201ctrusted flaggers,\u201d including NGOs and regulators, while the Commission maintains oversight of the entire system. Platforms can face fines of up to 6% of their global revenue if they fail to comply, creating strong incentives for broad preemptive censorship of users.<\/p>\n<p>Although the DSA is an EU law, its reach is global. Because these large online platforms operate worldwide, anyone, anywhere, faces the risk of having their content blocked or removed to comply with the DSA. This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2025\/07\/03\/the-eus-internet-law-a-blueprint-for-global-censorship-including-on-american-platforms\/\">includes Americans<\/a>, whose online posts could be censored even if protected under U.S. constitutional law.<\/p>\n<p>ADF International has been at the forefront of sounding the alarm about this sweeping legislation, pushing back against online
