Both were previously unanimously acquitted of \u201chate speech\u201d charges by two lower courts after publicly expressing their Christian beliefs.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">R\u00e4s\u00e4nen, who is a medical doctor, Finland\u2019s former Interior Minister, and a parliamentarian since 1995, was criminally charged with \u201cagitation against a minority group\u201d in 2021. She was charged under a section of the Finnish criminal code titled \u201cwar crimes and crimes against humanity\u201d for sharing her Christian beliefs on marriage and sexual ethics in\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PaiviRasanen\/status\/1140693636176384011\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">a 2019 tweet<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, as well as a 2019 live radio debate and 2004 church pamphlet. Bishop Pohjola was charged for publishing R\u00e4s\u00e4nen\u2019s 2004 pamphlet.\u202fThe prosecution has dropped the charge\u00a0regarding\u00a0the radio debate in its appeal to the Supreme Court.\u202f\u202f \u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8c931de elementor-blockquote--skin-border elementor-widget elementor-widget-blockquote\" data-id=\"8c931de\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"blockquote.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote class=\"elementor-blockquote\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-blockquote__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #AF272F\">\u201cFree societies should never criminalize peaceful expression. It continues to demand\u00a0several\u00a0thousands of\u00a0Euros in fines and that R\u00e4s\u00e4nen\u2019s publications be censored.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The case has garnered global media attention as human rights experts voice concern over the threat to free speech in Finland and beyond.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Trial for a tweet<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Police investigations against R\u00e4s\u00e4nen\u00a0commenced\u00a0in June 2019. A member of the Finnish Lutheran church, her tweet questioned the church\u2019s sponsorship of &#8216;Pride 2019,\u2019 accompanied by an image of Bible verses from the first chapter of the book of Romans.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For this, she was subjected to a total of 13 hours of police interrogations over many months, including being\u00a0frequently\u00a0asked by police to explain her understanding of the Bible. In April 2021, Finland\u2019s Prosecutor General brought three criminal charges against R\u00e4s\u00e4nen.\u202f\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">R\u00e4s\u00e4nen has served as a member of the Finnish parliament since 1995. From 2004-2015 she was chair of the Christian Democrats, and from 2011-2015 she was the Minister of the Interior.
