of Finland will hear the landmark case of Finnish parliamentarian Dr. P\u00e4ivi R\u00e4s\u00e4nen and Bishop Juhana Pohjola, who stand accused of \u201chate speech\u201d for publicly expressing their Christian beliefs. The case, which began over a 2019\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PaiviRasanen\/status\/1140693636176384011\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">tweet<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0quoting the Bible, will now be heard at the nation\u2019s highest court following two unanimous acquittals\u2014first by the Helsinki District Court in 2022 and then by the Court of Appeal in 2023.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Supreme Court\u2019s decision will\u00a0determine\u00a0not only the fate of the\u00a0defendants,\u00a0but\u00a0also set a precedent for the future of free speech and freedom of religion in Finland and across Europe.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><strong>&#8220;In a free society, it should never be a crime to share a Bible verse or express beliefs rooted in faith. The burden of the legal ordeal of the past few years has been challenging, but I remain hopeful that justice will prevail \u2014 not only for me, but for the wider principle of free speech in Finland. No one should face criminal charges for peacefully voicing their convictions,&#8221; said R\u00e4s\u00e4nen ahead of the trial.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">R\u00e4s\u00e4nen, Finland\u2019s former Minister of the Interior, faces two\u00a0criminal charges for expressing her deeply held beliefs on marriage and sexuality\u2014through a 2019 tweet\u00a0and a 2004 pamphlet published by Bishop Pohjola. All are prosecuted as \u201cagitation against a minority group,\u201d a charge listed under the section of the Finnish Criminal Code concerning\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWar Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If convicted, R\u00e4s\u00e4nen and Pohjola face thousands of euros in fines and\u00a0the censorship of\u00a0the tweet and the church booklet, which\u00a0express traditional Christian teachings.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2ff54048 elementor-blockquote--skin-border elementor-widget elementor-widget-blockquote\" data-id=\"2ff54048\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"blockquote.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote class=\"elementor-blockquote\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-blockquote__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #AF272F\">\u201cIt should not be considered a crime to pass on what Christians have always believed\u201d. <\/span>\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-q-footer\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"elementor-blockquote__author\">- Rev. I look forward to the oral hearing with confidence, where we can, with a clear conscience and openly, express how every person has an inviolable human dignity and what the Christian view of marriage means.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThis case is larger than\u00a0me\u00a0or P\u00e4ivi R\u00e4s\u00e4nen. It is about whether Finland will remain a country where freedom of speech and religion are respected in practice, not just in\u00a0theory.\u00a0The Christian message of marriage and sexuality has been taught for two millennia, and it should\u00a0never\u00a0be\u00a0considered a crime to\u00a0speak\u00a0what Christians have always believed,\u201d\u00a0Pohjola continued.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Free Speech on Trial<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Paul Coleman, Executive Director of ADF International, which is\u00a0coordinating\u00a0R\u00e4s\u00e4nen\u2019s legal defense,\u00a0stated:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIn a democracy, no one should face criminal prosecution for expressing deeply held beliefs. Criminalizing peaceful speech through so-called \u2018hate speech\u2019 laws not only\u00a0silences\u00a0important conversations\u2014it endangers democracy itself. The years-long prosecution of P\u00e4ivi R\u00e4s\u00e4nen has created a climate of fear, signaling to others that certain opinions,\u00a0including those\u00a0grounded in faith, are unwelcome in public life. Finland\u2019s Supreme Court now\u00a0has the opportunity to\u00a0protect freedom of speech and set an example for the rest of Europe.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">From Tweet to Supreme Court<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The case began in 2019 when R\u00e4s\u00e4nen, a member of the Finnish Lutheran Church, questioned her church leadership\u2019s decision to sponsor the Helsinki Pride event.\u00a0Her\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PaiviRasanen\/status\/1140693636176384011\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">tweet<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which included a photograph of Bible verses, triggered a police investigation. Over several months, R\u00e4s\u00e4nen was subjected to more than 13 hours of police interrogation, during which she was repeatedly asked to explain her theological understanding of Scripture.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 2021, Finland\u2019s Prosecutor General brought three criminal charges against her. Bishop Pohjola was charged for publishing R\u00e4s\u00e4nen\u2019s 2004 pamphlet on\u00a0the\u00a0Christian\u00a0understanding of marriage and\u00a0sexuality.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A Global Test Case for Freedom<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The case has drawn international concern from legal experts, parliamentarians, and religious freedom advocates who view it as a test for whether Finland\u2014a member of the European Union and Council of Europe\u2014will uphold its human rights commitments under international law.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Both the District Court and Court of Appeal unanimously acquitted R\u00e4s\u00e4nen and Pohjola, finding that it is not the role of the state to \u201cinterpret biblical concepts.\u201d Nevertheless, the prosecution appealed once again, bringing the case before the Supreme Court, which will\u00a0hear the case tomorrow and\u00a0then issue\u00a0a final ruling\u00a0in the coming months.<\/span><span
