Around the world, debates around assisted suicide are intensifying.\u202fIn March,\u202fScotland resolutely rejected\u202fthe\u202fpractice, while\u202fAlberta announced\u202fsignificant\u202fnew legislation to protect individuals from\u202fit.\u202fMeanwhile, in the United Kingdom,\u202fa bill that would legalise the practice in England and Wales\u202flooks set to fail in\u202fthe House of Lords\u202fas there will be insufficient time to consider proposed amendments before the end of the Parliamentary session.\u202f<\/p>

Scotland\u2019s decision\u202fwas particularly\u202fnotable given\u202fthat its parliament is\u202flargely composed\u202fof left-leaning and centre-left parties,\u202fyet\u202fthe bill was defeated.\u202fLeaders from the Scottish National Party, Labour, and the Conservatives, along with the country\u2019s last two First Ministers,\u202funited in a rare\u202fshow of unity.\u202fThe final vote rejected the Assisted Dying for Terminally Ill Adults Bill by 69 to 57,\u202fprotecting the vulnerable from\u202fthe clear dangers that come with these laws.\u202f<\/p>

The following day, Alberta introduced legislation that\u202fwould\u202fsignificantly\u202froll back\u202fCanada\u2019s\u202fexpansive\u202fMedical Assistance in Dying\u202f(MAID)\u202fregime.\u202fUnder the proposed law, individuals must be expected to die within the next 12 months to qualify, and assisted suicide would be prohibited for those whose sole condition is mental illness.\u202fThis step reflects\u202fgrowing awareness of the dangerous\u202fpersonal\u202fand societal\u202frisks\u202fposed by state-sanctioned\u202fdeath.\u202f<\/p>

Deaths\u202funder Canada\u2019s\u202fMAID\u202fprogram in Alberta have risen\u202f109% over the past four years, making it one of the leading causes of death\u202fnationwide.\u202fAlberta\u2019s Premier, Danielle Smith,\u202femphasised\u202fthat the law is \u201cabout protecting vulnerable Albertans.\u201d\u202fWhile\u202fthe federal government\u202fmoves\u202fto expand MAID\u202facross the country,\u202fincluding for mental health conditions alone, Alberta is\u202fdrawing boundaries\u202fto safeguard\u202fthose at greatest risk.\u202fIf\u202fenacted,\u202fthe Safeguards for Last Resort Termination of Life Act would\u202fbar assisted\u202fsuicide\u202ffor minors,\u202fprohibit cases based solely on\u202fmental illness, and\u202fcodify\u202fadditional\u202fprotections and rights for healthcare providers to object on conscience grounds.\u202f<\/p>

It\u2019s\u202fimportant to recognise that no\u202famount\u202fof \u201csafeguards\u201d can truly make assisted suicide safe. Legalising the practice inherently endangers human life.\u202fHowever,\u202fAlberta\u2019s proposed\u202flegislation is a\u202fstep toward shielding vulnerable citizens from an increasingly permissive system.\u202f<\/p>

The experience\u202fof\u202fjurisdictions\u202fthat allow assisted\u202fsuicide\u202fconsistently shows a pattern:\u202fOnce death laws are introduced,\u202fthey expand.\u202fThis\u202freality\u202fis what\u202fthe UK Parliament\u202fhas been\u202fconfronting.\u202f<\/p>

Proposals for assisted suicide\u202fcan\u202fstart with broad public support, but enthusiasm wanes once the real-world consequences are examined.\u202fIn Scotland,\u202fLiam McArthur\u2019s\u202fAssisted Dying for Terminally Ill Adults Bill\u202finitially\u202fgained momentum last year.\u202fOver time, as lawmakers\u202fscrutinised the specifics,\u202fsupport\u202fdiminished.\u202fBy the final vote,\u202fmany who had initially\u202fbeen favourable had\u202fturned against it, finding the bill increasingly difficult to defend.\u202f<\/p>

One of the most\u202fimpactful contributions\u202ffrom the Scottish Parliament\u202fcame from Jeremy Balfour,\u202fa parliamentarian\u202fand lifelong disability-rights advocate. Drawing on his\u202fpersonal\u202fexperience, he\u202furged\u202flawmakers to consider the\u202fimplications of living in a society where dependency is seen as a burden.\u202fHe\u202fhighlighted\u202fthat disabled individuals across Scotland were watching\u202fanxiously.\u202f\u201cWe cannot legislate against the feeling of being a burden,\u201d he said.\u202f\u202f<\/p>

Experience elsewhere\u202freinforces this concern.\u202fIn Oregon, where assisted suicide has been legal for\u202fnearly 30\u202fyears,\u202fan increasing number of patients cite worries about burdening others. Additionally, the demographics of those requesting assisted death have shifted:\u202fwhereas\u202finitially many were privately insured, by 2021, a majority relied on government insurance,\u202findicating\u202fthat vulnerability and circumstance heavily influence these life-and-death decisions.\u202f<\/p>

In Scotland, organisations\u202frepresenting\u202fgeneral practitioners, psychiatrists, and palliative care specialists all raised serious\u202fobjections\u202fto the bill. Several shifted from neutral positions to opposition as debates progressed,\u202fconcluding that no safeguards could neutralise the inherent risks.\u202f<\/p>

Canada\u2019s experience\u202fillustrates\u202fhow quickly\u202fthose concerns\u202fcan\u202fexpand.\u202fWhat began as a\u202fsomething focused on\u202fterminally ill individuals has grown into one of the most permissive assisted suicide systems in the world. Activists have consistently\u202fpressed for broader\u202feligibility\u202fwith\u202fprovisions in place to extend MAID to mental illness.\u202f\u202f<\/p>

For the UK, the hope is that Parliament resists\u202fa similar trajectory.\u202fThe Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, approved by the House of Commons last year,\u202fnow appears likely to fail in\u202fthe Lords due to unresolved questions and the parliamentary session\u2019s end.\u202fThis outcome should be welcomed.\u202f\u202f<\/p>

Tragically,\u202fthis week also saw\u202fthe UK\u202fParliament decriminalise abortion up to birth, allowing fully developed babies to be\u202fterminated\u202fat any stage.\u202fA second amendment to restore mandatory doctor consultations instead of the \u201cabortion pills by post\u201d system was rejected.\u202fThese decisions reflect a profound disregard for human life, with far-reaching consequences for both mothers and society at large.\u202f<\/p>

The same legislative body now\u202ffaces decisions\u202fabout\u202fassisted\u202fsuicide. If the bill\u202ffails to\u202fpass,\u202fas now seems likely, it will be a cause for\u202fgreat\u202frelief.\u202fScotland\u2019s experience\u202fshows that\u202fcloser scrutiny makes assisted suicide\u202fimpossible\u202fto justify,\u202fand Alberta\u202fdemonstrates\u202fa\u202fjurisdiction\u202fnow plotting a different\u202fpath. There is no safe version of this law. Westminster should\u202flet this bill\u202fdie, and\u202fkeep it that way.\u202f\u202f<\/p>
