In South Asia in particular, these laws have been noted to have a chilling effect on\u00a0freedom\u00a0of speech and expression and freedom of religion. It is imperative that\u00a0these\u00a0countries take all necessary action to repeal such laws to ensure that religious minorities are able to freely practice their faith<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u00bb<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0she continued.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\"><b>The dangers of blasphemy and conversion laws<\/b><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">A\u00a0recent example of the dangers of blasphemy laws is the case of a <a href=\"https:\/\/adfinternational.org\/pakistani-christians-granted-asylum-after-release-from-death-row\/\">Pakistani Christian couple who spent seven years on death row<\/a> over false blasphemy charges.\u00a0Shagufta Kausar and her husband Shafqat Emmanuel\u00a0had been living in poverty with their four children in Punjab, Pakistan. On 18 June 2013, allegedly blasphemous text messages, were sent to a cleric and a lawyer from a phone seemingly registered in Shagufta\u2019s name.\u00a0The parents\u00a0were arrested and charged with blasphemy on 21 July 2013.\u00a0Shagufta and Shafqat are\u00a0illiterate and would not have been able to write any text messages at all. Shagufta explained that her phone had been missing for a month at the time of the incident. It is uncertain who sent the messages and for what reason.\u00a0In 2014, a session court sentenced\u00a0the couple\u00a0to death by hanging.\u00a0After the Lahore High Court overturned their death sentence in early June, the parents of four faced death threats\u00a0and were forced to flee the country.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Anti-conversion laws restrict religious conversions by regulating how one\u2019s faith or belief is shared with others and also by creating bureaucratic hurdles such as inquiries by local government authorities or police to determine if the conversion is genuine.
