I know that the prosecution is trying to make an example of me to scare others into silence. Yet, you do not have to align with my views to agree that everyone should be able to speak freely. Regarding the booklet discussing Christian anthropology and homosexuality, which R\u00e4s\u00e4nen wrote almost 20 years ago, the prosecution said: \u201cThe point isn\u2019t whether it is true or not but that it is insulting.\u201d The prosecutor also stated, that \u201cthe authors of the Bible are not indicted\u201d today, but that R\u00e4s\u00e4nen\u2019s use of the word \u201csin\u201d is \u201cdegrading\u201d and violates \u201csexual rights\u201d. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The prosecution also argued: \u201cWe can limit freedom of expression in the outward expression of religion.\u201d And pointing to the Bible-Tweet;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> the prosecutor&nbsp;summarized: <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00abYou can cite the Bible, but it is R\u00e4s\u00e4nen\u2019s interpretation and opinion about the Bible verses that are criminal\u00bb.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Last year, the prosecution appealed the Helsinki District Court\u2019s unanimous March 2022 ruling clearing R\u00e4s\u00e4nen and Bishop Pohjola of \u201chate speech\u201d charges. Criminalizing speech through so-called \u2018hate-speech\u2019 laws shuts down important public debates and endangers democracy. Cases like P\u00e4ivi\u2019s create a culture of fear and censorship and are becoming increasingly common worldwide. Finland\u2019s former Prosecutor General brought three criminal charges against R\u00e4s\u00e4nen over the contents of a booklet R\u00e4s\u00e4nen wrote on these topics in 2004, for engaging in a debate on a 2019 radio show, and for a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PaiviRasanen\/status\/1140693636176384011\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">tweet<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> containing a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adfinternational.org\/paivi\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">picture of Bible verses<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> that R\u00e4s\u00e4nen had directed at her church leadership. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Bishop Juhana Pohjola<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> faces trial alongside her for publishing R\u00e4s\u00e4nen\u2019s pamphlet for his congregation almost 20 years ago. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">The charge falls under the section of \u201cwar crimes and crimes against humanity\u201d of the Finnish criminal code.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Police investigations commenced after R\u00e4s\u00e4nen, a member of the Finnish Lutheran church, questioned her church leadership\u2019s sponsorship of &#8216;Pride 2019,\u2019 in a tweet accompanied by an image of Bible verses.
