Meanwhile, Muslim student groups at both universities have been permitted to hold worship and fellowship meetings in university-constructed worship and meeting spaces. Both universities have relatively high percentages of Christian students and faculty despite Katsina being a Muslim-majority state. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One Christian university student in Katsina said, \u201cWe only want to be able to freely gather and worship as Christians on equal terms with other religious faiths. It is wrong that our universities are preventing us from exercising our most basic, fundamental rights.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cNo person should be discriminated against for their faith, and the actions of these state and federal universities are plainly unjust,\u201d stated <a href=\"https:\/\/adfinternational.org\/our-team\/sean-nelson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sean Nelson<\/a>, ADF International\u2019s lead attorney on the case. \u201cThe world continues to watch as Nigerian authorities regularly violate the religious freedom rights of their citizens. This kind of discrimination against Christian students cannot be allowed to spread. These two universities should immediately revoke these discriminatory policies and allow Christians on their campuses to gather and worship freely.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lawsuits on behalf of the students have been instituted under provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that protect Nigerian citizens\u2019 right to freedom of religion or belief. ADF International is supporting the case.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Nigeria\u2019s religious freedom track record<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Together with other religious minorities in Nigeria, the persecution of Christians in Nigeria is especially severe. Worldwide, over\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/africa\/commentary\/slaughter-nigerian-christians-warrants-international-attention\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">5,500 Christians<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fwere killed for their faith in 2022. Of those, 90% were Nigerian. At least\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/256385\/christian-villages-in-nigeria-reeling-after-christmas-attacks-leave-nearly-200-dead#:~:text=Christian%20villages%20in%20Nigeria%20reeling%20after%20Christmas%20attacks%20leave%20nearly%20200%20dead,-This%20image%20made&amp;text=Catholic%20and%20Nigerian%20leaders%20are,nearly%20200%20Christian%20Nigerians%20dead.\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">200 Christians<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fwere murdered by militants in Plateau State, Nigeria, this past Christmas. \u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The criminalisation of blasphemy in Nigeria carries with it dangerous implications for the country as a whole. In a country of more than 200 million, split nearly evenly between Christians and Muslims, blasphemy laws are a significant driver of societal tensions. These laws punish the innocent for expressing their beliefs, silence people from sharing their faith, and perpetuate societal violence.
