Local authorities arrested him,\u00a0while a mob\u00a0burned his home to the ground.\u00a0On\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">10 August\u00a02020,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a Sharia court convicted him of blasphemy and sentenced him to death by hanging.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In January 2021,\u00a0the\u00a0court\u00a0overturned the conviction, citing serious procedural flaws, including the lack of legal representation during his original trial. The High Court ordered a retrial, in which Sharif-Aminu would face the same death penalty blasphemy law. After an appellate court upheld the retrial order in 2022, Yahaya Sharif-Aminu appealed to the Supreme Court of Nigeria.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThis case goes beyond one young man. It is about whether millions of Nigerians can live free from fear under unjust blasphemy laws,\u201d said Sean Nelson, Legal Counsel for Global Religious Freedom at ADF International. \u201cWe pray that out of Yahaya\u2019s case,\u00a0we will ultimately see an end to these\u00a0draconian blasphemy\u00a0laws and improved protections for religious minorities,\u00a0including Christians\u00a0and others,\u00a0in Nigeria.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sharif-Aminu\u00a0has\u00a0remained\u00a0in prison\u00a0for over five years and is currently\u00a0awaiting justice from the Supreme Court.\u00a0\u00a0Sharif-Aminu, in his appeal,\u00a0is now asking the court not only to\u00a0free\u00a0him,\u00a0but also to declare\u00a0Kano State\u2019s\u00a0death penalty\u00a0blasphemy law unconstitutional,\u00a0arguing that\u00a0it\u00a0violates\u00a0Nigeria\u2019s own constitution and international commitments to protect freedom of religion and expression.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A ruling in\u00a0Sharif-Aminu\u2019s favor could set a precedent for the entire country, potentially rendering blasphemy laws unenforceable and protecting\u00a0religious minorities\u00a0from facing similar prosecutions in the future.\u00a0A positive ruling would have a major effect around the world, as Nigeria is one of only seven countries in the world with a death penalty blasphemy law.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt\u00a0is\u00a0our hope that the Supreme Court will deliver justice to this young man,\u201d said\u00a0Kola\u00a0Alapinni, international human rights lawyer and legal counsel for Yahaya Sharif-Aminu.\u00a0\u201cFor far too long,\u00a0blasphemy laws have wrongfully\u00a0been used to persecute and harm religious minorities.
