Vaughan-Spruce&#8217;s case, that\u00a0\u00ab<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Crown Prosecution Service has issued proceedings under Section 9 of the Public Order Act 2023, in relation to one case, since it was\u00a0commenced\u00a0on 31 October 2024.\u00bb<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335557856&quot;:16777215,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Vaughan-Spruce had not yet\u00a0received\u00a0information about\u00a0the\u00a0criminal charge when this\u00a0written answer\u00a0was\u00a0issued, but\u00a0was informed hours later in a letter from West Midlands Police.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335557856&quot;:16777215,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">All\u00a0previous\u00a0court cases\u00a0regarding\u00a0the status of silent prayer took place in the context of\u00a0\u201cbuffer zones\u201d\u00a0enforced by local authorities via Public Spaces Protection Orders, rather than\u00a0through\u00a0this\u00a0new law.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335557856&quot;:16777215,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The\u00a0new national\u00a0law prohibits<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0\u201cinfluencing any person\u2019s decision to access, provide or facilitate abortion services\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0within\u00a0150m\u00a0of\u00a0abortion facilities, but does not mention silent prayer specifically.\u00a0<\/span><span own is not enough to meet the threshold of criminality\u00a0unless it is accompanied by \u201covert\u201d activity.<\/span><span Midlands Police informed Vaughan-Spruce she was under investigation for praying silently\u00a0near\u00a0the facility on\u00a027<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0January, as well as several other\u00a0subsequent\u00a0dates.\u00a0Vaughan-Spruce has been peacefully praying in the same public area on a\u00a0regular\u00a0basis for two decades.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335557856&quot;:16777215,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Vaughan-Spruce, with\u00a0legal\u00a0support from ADF International, sent\u00a0numerous\u00a0requests for clarification\u00a0in\u00a0proceeding\u00a0months\u00a0as to the status of her case, pointing out that the legislation does not function\u00a0as a ban on her mere presence or on holding pro-life Christian\u00a0beliefs.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335557856&quot;:16777215,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Repeated injustice over silent \u201cthoughtcrime\u201d<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335557856&quot;:16777215,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In 2023, the charitable volunteer was\u00a0acquitted in court after being arrested for praying in a local \u201cbuffer zone,\u201d\u00a0under a Public Spaces Protection Order\u00a0that\u00a0banned \u201cexpressions of approval or disapproval\u201d of abortion. The incident occurred while the abortion facility was closed. The prosecution offered no evidence to support a conviction.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335557856&quot;:16777215,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Despite being cleared of any wrongdoing,\u00a0Vaughan-Spruce\u00a0was arrested again for\u00a0her\u00a0silent thoughts in the same location weeks later\u00a0in March 2023, opening an investigation that lasted several months. In August 2024, Vaughan-Spruce successfully challenged her two unjust arrests and received a settlement from West Midlands Police of \u00a313,000.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335557856&quot;:16777215,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">On regular occasions, she has been approached by officers and asked if she is praying.\u00a0Once, she was\u00a0observed\u00a0by two officers posted to watch her activities.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335557856&quot;:16777215,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Isabel Vaughan-Spruce commented:<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cDespite being fully vindicated multiple times after being wrongfully arrested for my thoughts,\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">it\u2019s<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0unbelievable that I have yet again been charged for standing in that public\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">area, and<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0holding pro-life beliefs. Silent prayer &#8211; or holding pro-life beliefs &#8211; cannot\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">possibly be<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0a crime. We all stand against harassment and abuse, but the \u2018buffer zone\u2019 law\u00a0broadly bans\u00a0\u2018influence&#8217;\u00a0which is being interpreted by police officers to target innocent people who happen to stand in a certain place and believe a certain thing. We will continue to robustly challenge this unjust censorship, and support Isabel\u2019s right to think and believe freely\u00a0as is the right of every person in the UK.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span
