ADF International supports her defence<\/li><li>Mrs Docherty\u2019s lawyer expected to argue that prosecution violates her human rights and that case should be dropped or moved to Scotland\u2019s supreme criminal court<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1eba94b2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-theme-post-featured-image elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"1eba94b2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"theme-post-featured-image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"651\" src=\"https:\/\/adfinternational.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Rose-Docherty-sign-e1768239210520-1-1024x651.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-87083\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/adfinternational.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Rose-Docherty-sign-e1768239210520-1-1024x651.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/adfinternational.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Rose-Docherty-sign-e1768239210520-1-300x191.jpg 300w, https:\/\/adfinternational.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Rose-Docherty-sign-e1768239210520-1-768x488.jpg 768w, https:\/\/adfinternational.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Rose-Docherty-sign-e1768239210520-1.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5ad29f02 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5ad29f02\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>GLASGOW (25 March 2026) &#8211; <\/strong>A Glaswegian grandmother will appear in court for a plea hearing tomorrow afternoon, after she was arrested and criminally charged for offering consensual conversation in a \u201cbuffer zone\u201d last September.<\/p><p>Rose Docherty, 75, is expected to enter a plea of \u201cnot guilty\u201d and will potentially receive a trial date at the hearing at Glasgow Sheriff Court, which is scheduled to start at 2pm.<\/p><p>Mrs Docherty\u2019s lawyer is also expected to challenge the compatibility of the prosecution and any forthcoming conviction against Mrs Docherty with her human rights, in what is called raising a \u201ccompatibility issue\u201d.<\/p><p>The lawyer is expected to argue that the charges violate Mrs Docherty\u2019s rights under the European Convention on Human Rights\u2014her Article 10 right to freedom of expression and her Article 14 right to protection from discrimination, since the \u201cbuffer zone\u201d legislation allows certain acts of expression but is being used to prosecute her.<\/p><p>Mrs Docherty&#8217;s lawyer will request that the prosecution is dropped or remitted, that is, moved, to the High Court of Justiciary, Scotland\u2019s supreme criminal court, to consider these issues.<\/p><p>The Christian grandmother faces two\u00a0charges related to alleged\u00a0\u201cinfluencing\u201d within\u00a0a\u00a0\u201cbuffer zone\u201d,\u00a0despite the fact that she only stood peacefully and\u00a0silently offered consensual conversation\u00a0outside\u00a0the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital\u00a0in Glasgow\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/adfinternational.org\/news\/grandmother-arrested-glasgow-buffer-zone\">last September<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p><p>She held\u00a0a sign that read:\u00a0\u201cCoercion is a crime, here to talk, only if you want\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0did not approach any\u00a0individual or\u00a0make any statement about abortion.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>The Christian grandmother is the first person to be charged under Scotland\u2019s censorial 2024 \u201cbuffer zone\u201d law, which forbids the \u201cinfluencing\u201d of anyone\u202fseeking\u202fto access \u201dabortion services\u201d. The \u201cbuffer zones\u201d are enforced within 200 metres of every hospital.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>The US State Department expressed concern over Mrs Docherty\u2019s arrest as \u201canother egregious example of the tyrannical suppression of free speech happening across Europe\u201d and the Scottish Catholic Bishops\u2019\u00a0Conference has also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcos.org.uk\/Our-Work\/Publications\/Press-Releases\">expressed concern<\/a>, and strongly criticised Scotland\u2019s \u201cbuffer zone\u201d legislation.\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Reacting to her arrest, Mrs<\/strong><strong>\u202f<\/strong><strong>Docherty<\/strong><strong>\u202f<\/strong><strong>said:<\/strong><strong>\u202f<\/strong><\/p><p><em>\u201cEverybody has the right to engage in consensual conversation. I held my sign<\/em><em>\u202f<\/em><em>with love and compassion,<\/em><em>\u202f<\/em><em>inviting anyone who<\/em><em>\u202f<\/em><em>wants<\/em><em>\u202f<\/em><em>to chat, to do so <\/em><em>\u2013<\/em><em> and stood peacefully, not approaching anyone.<\/em><em>\u202f<\/em>\u202f\u00a0<\/p><p><em>\u201cI should not be treated as a criminal for inviting people to chat with me \u2013 lending a listening ear. Conversation is not forbidden on the streets of Glasgow. And yet, this is the second time I have been arrested for doing just that.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Legal Counsel for ADF International, Jeremiah\u00a0Igunnubole\u00a0commented:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0deeply concerning that Scottish policing resources are being ploughed into arresting and prosecuting a peaceful grandmother offering to speak to people in public, rather than focusing on the problems caused by real crime in Glasgow.\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0<\/p><p><em>\u201cThis is not a case about harassment, intimidation or violent protest \u2013 this is simply a grandmother, who held a sign offering to speak to anyone who would like to engage.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/p><p>Following her arrest, Mrs Docherty was held in custody for several hours.\u00a0She was refused a chair to sit on in her cell, despite making it known that she had a double hip replacement.\u202f\u00a0<\/p><p>This was Mrs Docherty\u2019s second arrest for peacefully offering consensual conversation. Last\u00a0August, Scottish authorities dropped their case against\u202fher\u202ffor\u202fholding the same sign in the same place,\u00a0after a global outcry against the 75-year-old grandmother\u2019s arrest, including concerns raised in\u202fan\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/StateDRL\/status\/1894751701388636312?s=19\">online post<\/a>\u202fby the US State Department.\u202f\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>The US State Department <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/us\/politics\/2025\/09\/28\/us-condemns-arrest-scottish-antiabortion-campaigner\/\">commented<\/a> on Mrs Docherty\u2019s\u00a0latest\u00a0arrest:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p><em>\u201cThe arrest of Rose Docherty is another egregious example of the tyrannical suppression of free speech happening across Europe.<\/em>\u202f\u00a0<\/p><p><em>\u201cWhen 75-year-old grandmothers are<\/em><em>\u202f<\/em><em>being arrested<\/em><em>\u202f<\/em><em>for standing peacefully and offering conversation,<\/em><em>\u202f<\/em><em>common sense and basic civility are under attack.<\/em>\u202f\u00a0<\/p><p><em>\u201cThe United States will always speak out against these violations of fundamental rights.\u201d<\/em>\u202f\u00a0<\/p><p>The architect of Scotland\u2019s \u201cbuffer zone\u201d law, Gillian Mackay MSP,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/adfinternational.org\/en-gb\/news\/prayer-by-window-in-scotland-buffer-zone\">admitted<\/a>\u00a0on BBC Scotland earlier\u00a0last\u00a0year that the vague prohibitions\u00a0in the\u00a0legislation\u00a0could\u00a0criminalise\u00a0someone for praying visibly from a window in their home within\u00a0a \u201cbuffer\u00a0zone\u201d, \u201cdepending on who\u2019s passing by the window.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>US Vice President JD Vance highlighted this law as a particular matter for concern in his Munich Security Conference speech in
