a series of targeted attacks that have destroyed churches and other religious sites.\u00a0In a case filed at the\u00a0East African Court of Justice, advocates are calling for DRC recognition of the\u00a0damage\u00a0inflicted\u00a0during an attack on\u00a0Banyamulenge\u00a0Christian sites in the city of\u00a0Uvira\u00a0in January 2026,\u00a0as well as\u00a0compensation to rebuild\u00a0places of worship\u00a0that have been destroyed in these targeted attacks.\u00a0<\/span><span without safe spaces for communal gathering, prayer, or religious community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element In this case,\u00a0these\u00a0Christians\u00a0from the Banyamulenge community\u00a0in the DRC are now significantly hindered in their ability to worship,\u00a0gather\u00a0and live out their faith.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0primary\u00a0attack\u00a0took place\u00a0on 18\u00a0January 2026,\u00a0when\u00a0the\u00a0DRC\u00a0military and\u00a0aligned militia groups\u00a0recaptured\u00a0the city of\u00a0Uvira<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0from\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">M23\u00a0rebel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">who had occupied the city for months<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. However, members within the newly arrived forces then began deliberately destroying five Christian churches and other faith-based organisations held and used by the Banyamulenge community. The Banyamulenge are Congolese ethnic Tutsis that militant and radical ethnic Hutus have falsely accused of sympathy with foreign forces. Additionally, over 70 Banyamulenge homes were destroyed. These attacks were specifically carried out to destroy the central Christian religious pillars of the Banyamulenge in Uvira as a means of erasing their ethno-religious identity.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Advocates are\u00a0now\u00a0calling on authorities in the DRC to take immediate action to halt further attacks and ensure the protection of vulnerable religious communities.\u00a0ADF International is supporting the case before the court.\u00a0The case was filed at the East African Court of Justice\u00a0(EACJ)\u00a0on\u00a011 March 2026\u00a0at the\u00a0subregistry\u00a0in Nairobi.\u00a0The\u00a0EACJ\u00a0filing included\u00a0affidavits\u00a0from leaders and members of the\u00a0Uvira\u00a0church communities affected.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span reconstruction of destroyed churches and religious properties<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0Innocent Nteziryayo,\u00a0named counsel for the churches and representatives for the Banyamulenge community before the East African Court of Justice. \u201c<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Banyamulenge communities must be able to rebuild not only their homes, but also the\u00a0churches and organizations\u00a0that sustain their spiritual and communal life.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span
