1.1px;\"><b>Christian candidate faces \u201cmanifest prejudice\u201d by self-appointed panel attempting to influence the election unconstitutional provisions of the bill<\/b><\/span><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ab3a5b1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ab3a5b1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><b>WASHINGTON DC\u00a0\u202f(14 June 2021)<\/b> \u2013 Are people of faith barred from being elected to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights?\u00a0A coalition of human rights experts and religious freedom advocates voiced their concern this week.\u00a0The coalition published an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/adfint.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/IACHR-Letter.pdf\">open letter to member states of the Organization of American States<\/a>\u00a0calling for a fair election process for Commissioners.\u00a0It expressed concerns over the \u201cloaded and pejorative manner\u201d in which a self-appointed election monitoring group questioned a candidate over his religious beliefs.<\/p><p>\u201cNo one should be discriminated against because of their faith.\u00a0Christian candidates to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights should not face discrimination.\u00a0The questioning of the self-appointed \u2018Panel for Election Monitoring in the Inter-American Human Rights System\u2019 regarding Carlos Bernal\u2019s religious views was undoubtedly biased and exhibited a clear prejudice against Christians.\u00a0The Organization of American States should not condone attempts to discriminate against people of faith.\u00a0Failure to condemn such attempts will undermine the credibility and confidence in the Inter-American human rights system, \u201dsaid Tom\u00e1s Henr\u00edquez, Director of Advocacy, Latin America and the Caribbean for ADF International.<\/p><p><b>Concern\u00a0over biased questions in the election process<\/b><\/p><p>Since 2015, a group of NGOs spearheaded by the Open Society Initiative set up what they claim to be an independent expert panel for monitoring the election of Commissioners.\u00a0They purport to assess the candidates and give their recommendation to states on whether they believe the candidate ought to be elected.\u00a0In the case of Carlos Bernal Pulido, regarding the upcoming November election, the panel reached out to interview him.\u00a0After he sent the initial information they requested, he received additional questions that cast doubt on his integrity and his ability to perform as Commissioner due to this Christian faith.<\/p><p>The coalition highlighted the \u201cloaded and pejorative manner\u201d of the self-appointed panel\u2019s line of inquiry.\u00a0The panel had emailed Bernal a questionnaire and asked, whether if elected Commissioner he \u201cwill apply his religious beliefs or biblical interpretations to cases before him, rather than the sources of law that happen to be applicable.\u201d\u00a0It also asked, \u201cwhether he considered his religious beliefs to be contrary to any human rights source, standard or interpretation;\u00a0or whether his Christian faith entails him having \u2018preconceived ideas regarding\u2026 their role that women and LGBTI persons should occupy in society\u2019 \u201d(sic).<\/p><p><b>Other candidates were treated differently<\/b><\/p><p>In the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/adfint.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/IACHR-Letter.pdf\">open letter<\/a>, the coalition points out that \u201cother candidates have never been asked whether they would apply their religious (or other) beliefs to replace the sources of law that govern the system, much less whether they have pre-conceived ideas about social groups, such as religious communities. \u201c<\/p><p>The coalition maintains that \u201cthe evaluation to decide whether Bernal will serve on the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights cannot and should not be based on bad faith questioning of his religious convictions, but rather on his extensive judicial and academic career, with respect to which the panel had no objections. \u201c<\/p><p><b>Elections set for November<\/b><\/p><p>The election of the new Commissioners and Judges for the Inter-American Commission and Court will be held during the 2021 General Assembly of the Organization of American States in Guatemala.\u00a0Originally slated to occur in June, it was pushed back to November of this year.\u00a0Candidates to the open positions are currently campaigning to secure the support of member states.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a1c4475 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\"
