Both have been criminally charged with \u201chate speech\u201d for publicly sharing their faith-based beliefs.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">R\u00e4s\u00e4nen, Finland\u2019s former Minister of the Interior, was charged for \u201cagitation of a minority group\u201d for a 2019 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PaiviRasanen\/status\/1140693636176384011\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">tweet<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> on marriage and sexuality, in addition to a 2019 radio debate and 2004 pamphlet. The charge falls under the section of \u201cwar crimes and crimes against humanity\u201d of the Finnish criminal code. The bishop was charged for publishing the pamphlet.\u00a0 The prosecution is demanding tens of thousands of euros in fines and the censorship of publications reflecting R\u00e4s\u00e4nen\u2019s beliefs on marriage and sexuality. Despite their unanimous acquittal at the Helsinki District Court in 2022, the prosecution appealed the \u201cnot guilty\u201d verdict on the basis that the Court reached the wrong conclusion, which the Finnish legal system permits.
