Yet in situations of repression, leaders who bear witness to the inviolable nature of human dignity are indispensable for the safeguarding of human rights. Today the European Parliament curated its shortlist for the 2023 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, Europe\u2019s highest human rights award.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2a6c114 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"2a6c114\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newadfinterstg.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Bishop-Rolando-Alvarez-1-CROPPED.jpeg\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8d4c6c2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8d4c6c2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>One of the nominees, <a href=\"https:\/\/adfinternational.org\/bishop-rolando-alvarez\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bishop Rolando \u00c1lvarez<\/a> from Nicaragua, is currently serving a 26-year prison sentence for peacefully opposing government repression. Following the April 2018 unrest directed against the Ortega regime, Nicaragua descended into a state of turmoil. The bishop became a well-known figure for offering a message of hope and encouragement in his sermons.<\/p><p>As the regime turned its sights on the Catholic Church\u2014including places of worship, religious orders, institutions, media, and the faithful\u2014Bishop \u00c1lvarez was caught in the crosshairs for denouncing the government\u2019s abuses.<\/p><p>On 10 February 2023, Bishop \u00c1lvarez was convicted of \u201cundermining national integrity\u201d and \u201cpropagation of false news\u201d in a sham trial of which he had not even been notified.<\/p><p>The charges were laid on the basis of sermons that he had delivered, which had been offered from the pulpit in fulfillment of what he considered his religious duty to preach about the government\u2019s human rights violations. He is currently languishing in prison, deprived of contact with his family and his lawyers. The state of his well-being and health has prompted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/cna\/is-nicaragua-s-bishop-alvarez-still-alive-a-u-s-congressman-demands-proof\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">international concern<\/a>.<\/p><p>Because there are no avenues for effective appeal in Nicaragua, legal advocacy organization ADF International has filed an urgent appeal for justice at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, which is tasked with the promotion of human rights throughout Latin America.<\/p><p>Given the state of affairs in Nicaragua, international action is essential to obtain justice for Bishop \u00c1lvarez and to end persecution in Nicaragua.<\/p><p>No state should be able to persecute people because of their faith. The Nicaraguan government\u2019s crackdown on religious leaders clearly serves to intimidate ordinary people and suppress their ability freely to live out their faith.<\/p><p>By vocally resisting tyranny, Bishop \u00c1lvarez stood up for the basic freedoms of his fellow citizens. Having rejected a government offer of exile in order that he might remain in the country, the bishop has shown a steadfast commitment to accompanying Nicaraguans through these difficult times, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.laprensani.com\/2022\/04\/15\/nacionales\/2981464-monsenor-alvarez-denuncia-ataque-contra-colaboradora-si-tocan-a-un-miembro-de-la-iglesia-nos-tocan-a-todos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">declaring<\/a>, \u201cWhatever you want to do with me, if you are going to do it to me, do it to me and not to the faithful, not to the holy people of God. I tell you that in all clarity and simplicity.\u201d<\/p><p>Here is a man sacrificially committed to bearing the brunt of government oppression in the hope of securing a better future for his beloved people.<\/p><p>The international community must act to end persecution in Nicaragua and to free those who, like the bishop, courageously speak the truth.<\/p><p>Flouting international human rights law, the regime has repeatedly violated Bishop \u00c1lvarez\u2019s religious freedom and his right to free speech. Everyone concerned with protecting human rights should speak out in his support, just as he has spoken out in courageous support of his fellow Nicaraguans.<\/p><p>As the European Parliament chooses its winner for this year\u2019s Sakharov Prize, we hope Bishop \u00c1lvarez will be recognized. This important gesture would bring much-needed attention to his plight and to the persecution of the Nicaraguan people.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div
