Our recent polling highlights the importance of this issue. The report recommends the creation of a right of redress in law for students and individuals who have suffered the negative consequences of censorship in the academic sphere. The recognition of the harm caused by \u2018cancel-culture\u2019 will be meaningful to Julia Rynkiewicz, who we supported after she was suspended from her midwifery training at Nottingham University on account of her views. We hope that the proposals will open up access to justice for other students who, like Julia, may fall victim to discriminatory measures.\u201d<\/p><p>The publication of the report is timely.\u00a0New polling\u00a0commissioned by the Reclaim Party\u00a0and published\u00a0only\u00a0days ago\u00a0found that 50%\u00a0of\u00a0respondents believed that freedom of speech is under threat. This bolsters findings in the recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.protectfreespeech.uk\/national-poll\/\">ADF International poll\u00a0<\/a>where 50%\u00a0of\u00a0students declared that they worried their peers would treat them differently if they expressed their true views about some issues important to them. Over a third\u00a0were fearful to\u00a0share\u00a0their opinion, should it\u00a0adversely impact their future careers.<\/p><p>The report solidifies the recent announcement that a \u201cFree Speech Champion\u201d will be created with powers to defend free speech and academic freedom in universities. This \u2018Champion\u2019 will be able to directly penalise colleges or student bodies that attempt to entrench cancel-culture, based on new statutory powers given to the student regulator, the Office for Students. The newly announced proposals taken together represent an important step towards tackling the cancel-culture that has limited free expression and robust academic debate in recent years.<\/p><p>\u201cThese announcements are timely and come as positive developments \u2013 but more must be done, particularly to ensure that university staff receive the training that they need\u00a0to\u00a0recognise and uphold the free speech of students and foster an inclusive and diverse learning environment.\u00a0While we welcome the proposals,\u00a0we will continue to advocate for\u00a0these better protections to be put into practice in order to\u00a0achieve the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/if-universities-cant-defend-free-speech-the-government-will-jwmnfznh7\">change\u00a0promised<\/a> by education secretary Gavin Williamson\u00a0when he identified the\u00a0problem\u00a0in\u00a02020,\u201d continued Christopher.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a1c4475
