AVISO: Challenges of extremism in South and Southeast Asia: high-level side event at religious freedom Ministerial

Summary

  • Panel discussion on religious freedom in South and Southeast Asia at Ministerial
  • Persecution of Christians has sharply increased in recent years

WASHINGTON DC (17 July 2019) – How can religious freedom be protected in South and Southeast Asia? This evening, ADF International is co-sponsoring a panel discussion event with the Religious Freedom Institute in Washington, D.C., on freedom of religion in the region. It is titled, “Advancing Religious Freedom in South and Southeast Asia: Religious Minorities and the Challenges of Extremism and Violent Ethno-Religious Nationalism,” and is taking place as a side event to the US Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom. The event will focus on the persecution religious minorities currently face in India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Nepal, and Burma.

“Nobody should be persecuted because of their faith. Religious freedom is under increasing threat in South and Southeast Asia with growing social and political hostility towards Christians and other religious minorities. Legal restrictions and extremist nationalism put religious minorities at risk of persecution and violence. We urge the international community to recognize these grave violations of religious freedom occurring in South and Southeast Asia and protect the rights of those who are being persecuted because of their faith,” said Kelsey Zorzi, Director of Advocacy for Global Religious Freedom for ADF International.
