- Debate focusing on mandate of Special Envoy
- Analysis of implementation of EU Guidelines on Freedom of Religion or Belief
Brussels (2 November 2018) – What is the current role of the Special Envoy and the EU Freedom of Religion or Belief Guidelines? On 5 November Andrzej Grzyb MEP will be hosting an event at the European Parliament on religious freedom. The event will focus on a parliamentary report on the mandate of the Special Envoy for the Promotion of Religion or Belief Outside the EU and the implementation of the EU Guidelines on the Promotion and Protection of Freedom of Religion or Belief.
“The mandate of the Special Envoy for freedom of religion or belief is vital to the global effort of protecting and promoting religious freedom. The valuable work of the current envoy, Ján Figeľ, confirms this. The mandate of the Special Envoy and the Guidelines on Freedom of Religion or Belief are vital instruments for challenging the rising tide of religious persecution,” said Adina Portaru, a human rights expert who will speak at the roundtable. Portaru serves as Legal Counsel for ADF International in Brussels.
EU should take more responsibility
The roundtable event will focus on how the position of the Special Envoy can be strengthened in order for the European Union to take a more active role in the promotion of freedom of religion. Research shows that threats to freedom of religion have been increasing in recent years. Human rights experts see the strengthening of the Special Envoy’s mandate as an important step towards promoting religious freedom across the globe.
