Kelsey Zorzi elected as President of the UN’s NGO Committee on Freedom of Religion or Belief

  • ADF International UN Counsel starts her second term
  • “Current crisis regarding religious freedom requires concerted efforts”

NEW YORK (29.6.2018) – This week, Kelsey Zorzi, UN counsel for ADF International, started her term as President of the UN’s NGO Committee on Freedom of Religion or Belief. She was elected after having served as the Committee’s Acting President from June 2017.

“Religious freedom is being undermined in every corner of the globe. The international community must unite to promote and protect this foundational human right. The NGO Committee on Freedom of Religion or Belief is committed to partnering with Member States, UN bodies, and other actors to highlight the current crisis and develop effective responses,” said Zorzi after the election.

Protecting conscience rights
The Committee, acting within the United Nations headquarters in New York City, works to protect the rights of freedom of thought, conscience, and religion or belief.

As UN Counsel, Kelsey Zorzi leads ADF International’s efforts to stop the persecution of Christians worldwide and to bring the perpetrators to justice. In her role as President, Zorzi will continue to promote religious freedom and the inherent value and dignity of every person.

“I feel extremely honoured to be elected to fulfil my duty as President of the Committee. The rights of freedom of thought, conscience, religion or belief are core values of a free society, protected by major human rights treaties. We have an obligation to prevent violations of people’s inherent freedoms. No person or group should live in fear of being killed, tortured, or oppressed because of their deeply held convictions,” Zorzi added.
