Violations continue despite 70 years of human rights declaration

Summary

  • Threats to right to life and to religious freedom highlighted at 70th anniversary event
  • I’m Human, Right? campaign urges EU and international community to take action

BRUSSELS (29 November 2018) – On 28 November, ADF International, with Marijana Petir MEP and Charles Tannock MEP, co-hosted a panel discussion at the European Parliament in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It focused on the continued relevance of this foundational human rights document and the responsibility of the EU in protecting the fundamental freedoms it outlines.

“The adoption of the Universal Declaration was a hugely important step for the international community. In Europe, we have the duty to stay true to this and set an example. Protecting freedom of religion and belief, the inherent dignity of life at all stages, and the right to family are all central to this. We must never cease working towards this goal both within the EU and externally,” said Marijana Petir, MEP.

I’m Human, Right? campaign

“We hope the I’m Human, Right? campaign will draw attention to the violations of basic fundamental freedoms faced by countless people across the globe. Here in Brussels, we hope the campaign will help inform EU policy makers of the threats to freedom of religion still existing worldwide. In Europe, we have both the means and the responsibility to positively influence and encourage the protection and promotion of human rights. We should not shy away from our duty,” said Adina Portaru, Legal Counsel for ADF International in Brussels.

ADF International’s I’m Human, Right? campaign urges the international community and the United Nations to uphold the right to life, to family, and to religious freedom as was originally intended by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. So far, individuals from over 170 countries have signed The Geneva Statement as part of this campaign. The Geneva Statement and the signatures will be presented to the United Nations Secretary General.

In the run-up to 10 December and in commemoration of the Universal Declaration, ADF International is hosting and participating in various events highlighting the I’m Human, Right? campaign and The Geneva Statement. They have now taken place in New Delhi and Brussels and are coming up in Geneva (3 December) and New York City (4 December).
