Advent Week IV: Life is fundamental

Advent Week IV: Life is fundamental

"For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." - Isaiah 9:6

Pavica Vojnović & Isabel Vaughan-Spruce

Europe

Parts of the United Kingdom have in place 150-metre “censorship zones” around abortion facilities that block pregnant women from hearing offers of help and even seek to punish individuals who offer silent prayers in the privacy of their minds while standing in the zone.

These censorship zones aren’t “pro-choice” but offer no choice.

We are so grateful to pro-life leaders like Isabel Vaughan-Spruce, Pavica Vojnović, and Adam Smith-Connor for their determination to respond to a need they see. All of these brave individuals have come under legal pressure – up to the point of prosecution – for exercising their fundamental right to pray in silence, in the place of their choosing.

Defending your right to live
and speak the truth.

In Germany, pro-life advocate Pavica Vojnović endured a four-year legal ordeal to defend the right to assemble and pray freely. She led a small prayer group, which gathered across the road from an abortion organization to conduct silent prayer vigils for women and their unborn children.

With our support, she took the case to Germany’s highest administrative court, which confirmed in June the right of the group to gather and pray in the place of their choosing.

Defend Religious Freedom Today

"Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead. He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again." - 2 Corinthians 1: 9-10

Yahaya Sharif-Aminu

Nigeria

What if you got the death penalty for sharing WhatsApp audio messages? This is the reality for Yahaya Sharif-Aminu, a Nigerian musician. But his case is now before the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

Will you help us release him and end blasphemy laws?

Blasphemy laws are in clear breach of international human rights. Moreover, they are also in contradiction to the Nigerian constitution, which guarantees religious freedom. Yahaya’s Supreme Court appeal challenges the constitutionality of the draconic blasphemy law of the Kano State, his home. A victory has the potential to overturn Sharia-based blasphemy laws in Northern Nigeria.

The Byles, Zalmas*, & the Wilsons

Turkey

David Byle

Turkish authorities are signalling their disregard for religious freedom by targeting pastors, missionaries, and their relatives with deportation and re-entry bans.

Obtaining lawful residency, the Zalma family moved to Istanbul to support a new Christian church community in 2009, investing significant time into learning the language, history, and customs of the people.

The British couple lived there for more than 11 years until Turkish authorities imposed a security code called “N-82” on Mario Zalma in 2019. The code indicates that someone poses a “threat to public order and security,” and amounts to a de facto ban from the country.

We’re providing critical legal support to Christians banned from Turkey for their faith – including the Zalmas – at the European Court of Human Rights.

"Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." - Matthew 5:10

Bishop Rolando Álvarez

Nicaragua

Nicaragua’s government has identified the church as a foremost threat to its power, targeting believers and the church at large with its repressive efforts. For preaching on themes of God-given human dignity and justice, in which he denounced the government’s human rights violations, Bishop Álvarez was recently sentenced to 26 years in prison.

Given the lack of effective avenues for justice in the country, we have petitioned the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to intervene and are conducting global advocacy to free the bishop and bring an end to religious persecution in Nicaragua.

The systematic persecution of Bishop Álvarez by Nicaraguan authorities started on 4 August 2022, when police agents prevented him from leaving his residence, the Episcopal Curia of Matagalpa, to celebrate Mass at a nearby cathedral. The Bishop, along with seminarians, priests, and a cameraman, was forcibly detained by police in the diocesan offices for 15 days.

Later, on 19 August 2022, police forcibly entered the residence and arbitrarily arrested Bishop Álvarez and seven other members of the Catholic Church without a warrant. Bishop Álvarez then was placed under house arrest by authorities.

With no further effective legal recourse available to him in Nicaragua, ADF International brought Bishop Álvarez’s case to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, filing a petition on his behalf on 12 September 2023.
