STATEMENT: EU Parliamentarians pressure European countries to introduce abortion with no limits, through all nine months of pregnancy

  • The European Parliament will vote on 8th July on a non-binding resolution calling for abortion to be inserted into the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU.
  • The text calls for abortion to be available across the EU, with no limits, throughout all nine months of pregnancy.

BRUSSELS (July 07, 2022)The following statement may be attributed to Dr. Adina Portaru, Senior Counsel for ADF International in Brussels:

“The radical attempt by Members of the European Parliament to pressure countries to adopt an extreme regime – abortion without limit through all nine months of pregnancy – represents a move which is greatly out of touch with the European people. In fact, a survey of 30 European countries shows that 6 out of 7 Europeans support some form of limit on abortion that would protect women and their unborn children.

Furthermore, the proposed text of this non-binding resolution is fundamentally inaccurate and misleading. There is no “right” to abortion – on the contrary, Article 2 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union upholds the right to life for everyone. Only five countries around the world allow abortion without any limit through all nine months of pregnancy – including China and North Korea.

Every government has a sovereign right to protect the most vulnerable in their countries – those in the womb. Women deserve better than abortion. A Europe which is truly committed to human rights is one that respects and protects both lives in a pregnancy – supporting both mother and child.”
